New Amex EveryDay Cards Make It Easier to Earn Membership Rewards

American Express is launching two new credit cards on April 2, so you can expect lots of posts when that day arrives. Probably not from me, though, so I’ll just take a moment now to let you know what to expect.

American express everyday card rewardsThese are credit cards, not charge cards, so you’ll be able to pay the balance off over time with interest. However, they also earn Membership Rewards points — something that has usually been linked to more prestigious cards like the Platinum Card or the Premier Rewards Gold Card, which also have high annual fees. Now you can get in on the valuable opportunities provided by Membership Rewards at a lower price point. (The benefits are actually very similar to the Blue Cash Everyday and Blue Cash Preferred cards from Amex, except the Blue cards earn cash back. Used wisely, a Membership Rewards point is more valuable than a penny.)

Read more on Amex’s website and sign-up for an email alert when the applications are available.

  • No annual fee
  • 10,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $1,000 in 90 days
  • 2 points per dollar at supermarkets (up to $6,000 annually)
  • 1 point per dollar everywhere else
  • Make 20 or more purchases during each statement period and get 20% bonus points on those purchases
  • $95 annual fee
  • 15,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $1,000 in 90 days
  • 3 points per dollar at supermarkets (up to $6,000 annually)
  • 2 points per dollar at gas stations
  • 1 point per dollar everywhere else
  • Make 30 or more purchases during each statement period and get 50% bonus points on those purchases

These are pretty good benefits, and especially with the larger bonus at supermarkets. I wouldn’t really use it for manufactured spend, though, because of the $6,000 cap. Amex seems to know that there’s huge potential for abuse.

I think the monthly transaction bonuses are one of the best features and are not hard to meet. If you had the EveryDay Preferred card, you could get 4.5 points per dollar at supermarkets vs. the 2 points per dollar I currently earn with the Amex Premier Rewards Gold card. Most families (and even childless people with expensive tastes) can easily spend $500 a month on groceries. $6,000 a year would earn 27,000 points. I don’t buy much gas, but with the 50% bonus, 3 points per dollar is among the best offers.

These benefits lead me to seriously consider replacing my Premier Rewards Gold card. After all, I can already get 2.14 points per dollar (with 7% annual dividend) on all travel purchases using the excellent Sapphire Preferred from Chase, and I was only keeping the PRG around for triple points on flights and double points on groceries. (Depending on your preferred carriers, Ultimate Rewards can be worth more than Membership Rewards, so earning fewer points isn’t a huge problem). However, I would lose the chance to get an annual 15,000-point bonus for spending $30,000 on the PRG.

What I really like about earning Membership Rewards is that I can use them for some particularly valuable travel experiences. United makes it very difficult to book on Singapore Airlines, so Ultimate Rewards aren’t very good for that. But Membership Rewards can be transferred directly to Singapore’s KrisFlyer, which may have higher award prices and fuel surcharges but also better award availability. I think that’s a worthy tradeoff.

I’m less enthusiastic about the fee-free EveryDay card. It’s not bad; in fact it’s pretty good as far as fee-free cards. But the EveryDay Preferred is just so much better for $95 a year. $6,000 a year on groceries could earn only 14,400 points with the EveryDay card (assuming 20% monthly bonus). The extra 12,600 points from the EveryDay Preferred card are worth at least $189 if valued at 1.5 cents each.

Membership Rewards were one of the first bank-issued loyalty currencies, but Chase has really stolen the show with their Ultimate Rewards currency. For example, I may pay for my Platinum Card in order to get some cardholder benefits, but I almost never use it to buy anything. I think the EveryDay and EveryDay Preferred cards are part of a serious effort to take back some market share.

Their "Purchase Protection" plan -- which protects purchases from accidental damage or theft for up to 90 days from their purchase date -- never ceases to amaze me. When I accidentally put my day-old cell phone through the washing machine, Amex was there and refunded my purchase in full in less than a week. When a friend's brand new HDTV was stolen from his apartment, Amex was there -- they credited him $1,000! Dealing with Amex customer service is always hassle-free. I have never had to jump through hoops to report unauthorized charges (when a card was stolen).American Express' online account management tools are quite advanced (and pleasing to the eye). On a single page, you can view account balances, make payments, and view rewards points -- for ALL cards at once. For any membership rewards junkies out there, Amex offers the widest array of rewards that I have ever seen -- from gift cards to travel rewards to "ShopAmex9quot; there is definitely something for everyone. And if you truly can't find ANYthing, you can always use your points to request a credit to your account in increments of $50 (10,000 points)!

I applied for a **Blue by American Express** card towards the end of 2005. The last thing I needed was another credit card, but I also thought that the 0% introductory interest rate could come in handy for anything major (i.e. car repairs). And with that rate being good for a solid year, why not take advantage of it?

Pretty good credit card

Comments about American Express - Blue Cash Everyday Credit Card :

I got this card because of a promotional transfer balance offer at 0% interest. I think it is a nice card to have. It is cool looking but that isn't typically a reason I would ever get a credit card for. It does have an awesome 90 day protection plan on purchases. I've never had to use it but it's nice to know that if I would like to make a large purchase for something that can be easily broken, I have this option. There is no annual fee on this card. They have a rewards system that operates on points. When you acquire enough points you can use them to purchase products, get cash back, pay towards your balance, travel and get gift cards. They don't tend to offer bonus offers regularly to get extra points which is why this isn't one of my favorite rewards card. However, it is definitely not bad.

I have had to call customer service a couple times to conduct business. The representatives were always polite, well informed, and did everything they could to assist me.

The rates and credit limit received are going to depend on your credit score and history. I have good credit so I got a decent interest rate and credit limit.

Comments about American Express - Blue Cash Everyday Credit Card :

I love the American Express Blue card not only for its looks but also its features. It is a no annual fee credit card but still has a decent membership rewards program. You earn points for each purchase though I don't completely understand how the points system works since they seem to be higher than $1/1 point. Once you have enough points you can either redeem them for products, gift cards, statement credits, or travel. The travel is a bit ridiculous since you need a ton of points to get something worthwhile but the gift cards are nice and there are many retailers to choose from.

Not too long ago I lost my card and was a bit frantic since I needed to make a purchase at a place that only takes American Express. It was after 5 p.m. and I called AMEX and explained my situation to them. To my surprise a new card was on my doorstep the next morning. With that kind of service, especially for someone who has a no fee card, I will be an American Express member for life.

Comments about American Express - Blue Cash Everyday Credit Card :

I love using AMEX Blue. I know when I use it I am getting Cash back in the form of paying my bill on my next statement. It's like building up a savings account, & using those "pennies9quot; to pay my bill. Lots of people save their loose change, then have to roll it up, take it to the bank, and get dollars in return. Here, you don't have to go to that trouble,. They do it for you.

American Express Card

Comments about American Express - Blue Cash Everyday Credit Card :

I would recommend American Express credit card if you're living in a large city or around area where there are a lot of credit card fraud. Also, if you're not those type of person that looking for great reward points. I have American Express credit card for over five years now, they have great customer service. You can usually get through to talk to a representative with very minimal wait time on the phone (around five minutes wait). As for credit card protection, there was one point two year ago when I thought they over did it. It was during the holiday season when I was out shopping for gifts, they would put my card on hold every time I use it to pay for a gift in the mall. I was so frustrated with the American Express credit card that I end up using the store credit card. I called in to try and resolve the issue, I had a very obnoxious and rude representative. So a couple day later when I called to cancel the credit card, another representative then resolve the issue and convince me to stay with their credit card by giving me more points. I decided to stay with American Express credit card. Since then I had not other issue with over protection of the credit card. Now I am currently living in a smaller city that have a lot of local grocery stores and restaurants that doesn't accept American Express credit card. So I had to finally make the switch to a different credit card. As for accumulating points to redeem for gift cards or travel, you don't accumulate a lot compare to other credit cards out there.

I would have given American Express customer service a higher rating if it wasn't for the one incident with the obnoxious and rude representative.

The card is not accepted in a lot of local restaurants or store due to their high rate that they charge the consumer.

Best Card For Everyday Use

Comments about American Express - Blue Cash Everyday Credit Card :

At one point in my life I felt like credit cards were all bad and could only lead you into debt. Well I partially stand by that statement because I have found the American Express Blue Cash Everyday Card to be a very beneficial card because it works for my spending habits. If I am going to be rewarded to shop I am taking advantage of this card. I actually ran across an ad on this particular card, the commercial sounding great so I checked into the Blue Cash Everyday Credit Card because I knew there had to be a "catch9quot;. Yes, there is an annual fee of $75, but the rewards this card offers if you use it makes up for the yearly fee. Now this card works for me because I have made it work for instance the card rewards you for buying groceries, gas, and department stores. I already have the cash to buy my groceries but I use this card instead and I am rewarded 6% on the groceries I purchase, then when my billing statement arrives, I have the money put aside to pay my balance off and I have earned a whopping 6% just for buying my groceries on the Blue Cash Everyday Card. Now I have only had this card for 6 months and I use it for everything. I feel like I am earning money to shop. Now there is a cap on the grocery reward which is $6000 in a years time and after that it drops down to 1% on groceries. Gas rewards are similar, you can earn 2% on gas purchases and department stores. I felt this card would benefit me at this time, since American Express offers interest free for 15 months, after that my interest rate will jump to 14% which is better than most in store credit cards. I actually find myself wanting to use my card so I can see the points I accumulate and cash in for actual cash, a lot of companies use gift card rewards, which is nice but cash can be used everywhere! Right now this card is working for me, now if you don't shop often for groceries or gas this card wouldn't benefit you. I have found a way to actually benefit from a credit card I never thought in a million years I would ever say that.

So far I have not had any issues to call customer service.

The rewards are great and they offer interest free payments for 15 months, In some cases they offer a sign up bonus and interest rate can be as low as 12% up to 21%depending on your credit history.
