Voice & Data Communications Specialist

Department: IM&D Voice & Data Networks

Reports To: Vice-President, Networks and User Services

Responsible to assist in the maintenance and upgrade of a rapidly changing network. This includes communication systems, hardware and software internal and external to all remote installations. Perform difficult problem solving, vendor interaction, network communications, some technical training, resource monitoring and network security. This position requires some working knowledge of LANs, WANs, PBXs, bridges, routers, switches, hubs, gateways, protocols, protocol analyzers and associated server platforms.

Assist in maintaining the company networks including LANs, WANs, PBXs, and mulitplexers

Perform equipment installations, relocation, and upgrades, as required

Efficient network problem analysis

Requires proactive and reactive maintenance using tools such as protocol analyzers, data line monitors, and various network management platforms

Assist in analyzing charts and data to be used as requirements in systems and platform capabilities

Perform difficult routine duties with minimal supervision

Responsible for upkeep of documentation and billing using Excel, Access and Word

Investigate and resolve support requests

Adhere to established security policies and procedures

Interface with multiple vendors and carriers

Produce regular statistical and status reports as needed

Respond to trouble tickets

Assist with BCP needs

Assist management as needed

Occasional travel for training, conferences, and disaster recovery or offsite equipment

On call support 7x24 30 minute response, as needed

Extended hours and/or alternate schedules, as needed

Extended duration of computer terminal usage

Associate’s degree in related field or equivalent education or work experience

Minimum two years of related experience in voice and/or data communications

Minimum two years experience with PC applications

Experience with protocol monitoring tools

Demonstrated understanding of networking topologies like Frame relay and Ethernet

Demonstrated understanding of protocols such as IP and IPX

Minimum two years experience with routers, switches, modems and network wiring

Must be able to effectively interact with coworkers and vendors

Consistent positive, cooperative, self-motivated, courteous and professional attitude

Ability to verbally communicate appropriately with others and appropriately respond to criticism from a supervisor

Demonstrated interpersonal skills including effective verbal and written communications
